With the construction of the huge Central Park complex on Broadway, the once highly creative but far more work day suburb of Chippendale has gone through an explosion of cool creative weekend options, for those not lucky enough to work in the inner-west.
One such option that has thrived on having more to deal with than just the morning rush of office workers is Something For Jess café on Abercrombie Street.
Competing against the suburbs long time love, Café Gulia, and better-known, within the Sydney dining scene, Brickfields, Something For Jess offers what I’d describe as a true thrift shop like charm, which befits the Chippendale suburb well.
The café is small and quite open to the street, while 12 months ago this meant open to mega-construction & street now this means mega-construction, street & park, a ratio which will only get better.
Service was relaxed and friendly. In the few times I’ve visited (and got a meal) they always seem excited and surprised by what meal options you order, which is pretty charming, in its own way. Just be aware that if you’re solo you’ll likely be relegated to one of the small tables along the back wall #nofriends.
In my order I followed the two guys near me I got a small latte.
The latte came to me at a reasonable (busy Saturday morning) pace from order to table and included with it some banter about what I was up to today etc – the usual café customer chatting affair.
Served in a random cup with unmatched saucer and novelty spoon, it was as charming as a coffee gets really. The coffee itself had some polish and effort put into it with some simple latte art done for style (on a side note – I hate that term latte art, it’s almost as wanky as writing this blog).
Oh, if you’re interested, the coffee grind, I think, is Parchment Coffee Traders roast and run through a pretty serious looking machine.
The aroma of the coffee was light and fruity with an initial state of something perhaps citrusy with an initial well-balanced acidity.
Letting it steep brought out rich cocoa like flavours and something more bright on the acidity side of things with more sourness in the aftertaste, in my opinion and in other words the coffee got even better.
Overall, it’s the lovable mutt like café of Chippendale – friendly, cute and a little rough around the edges. If you’re exploring Chippendale’s cafes this is 100% worth a stop (and notably open early on weekends, which has saved me a few times for weekend meetings), hang out with the hipsters… you’ll love it.
