Whole experience (cafe + coffee): 31/40
If you want a cafe which sums up where Sydney’s coffee and cafe scene is up to in 2016 this is it. Busy, crowded with a menu that seems to have as many pages dedicated to coffee as food, it has got wanky cafe written all over it. Hard not to love it… in a way.
I found out about Haven thanks to a mate of mine, Lachlan, who seems to be up to date with some of Sydney’s more in vogue cafes.
Our visit was pretty late as Sydney coffee standards go (I guess we all need time off), it would have been about 3pm the cafe was more setting up for their 4pm closing so, unlike other reviews I have read, we just walked right in.
Some advice. When you get here don’t just order a coffee on being seated. Instead have a read of the menu, when I was there, there was an interesting choice between berry or citrus espresso.
Look, if you’re a coffee snob this choice means your knowledge of regions, tastes, styles will be reduced in its usefulness. If you’re a normal person who just likes coffee it is not a bad way to work out what you’re looking for.
I went for the berry macchiato on advice from the staff.
Sweet, full bodied and sweet. You can’t fault Haven’s coffee. It’s pretty lovely. The trick Haven have is they provided a side with their coffee. For me, (kind of) berries – sultanas. Sultanas you could guess would make any berry flavoured coffee taste pretty much like something fruity. Nice trick.
Lachlan went for a filter coffee which they made to order, no batch brews here, just brews. I think he went for a chocolatey coffee and got some dark chocolate on the side.
Oh, I should say Haven’s other thing is you can tailor your coffee to a T. Check out their star thing. God help the barista who finds someone who actually wants to go through that, although I’m sure they’d do it with a smile.
